The US and its allies supported the Viet Minh immediately after the Japanese invasion in WW2. So formal military involvement began then. The Wikipedia article on the war is pretty good as a general background. The recent Ken Burns documentary is even better.

In National Treasure, they repeatedly round up 230-ish (in 2004) years since the Revolutionary War and say "three hundred years ago", compared to that, rounding 20-something to "thirty" years is nothing.

Yes, the OSS were on the ground supporting Ho Chi Minh in 1945. The extent to which that involvement created circumstances contributing to the Vietnam War is open to debate, but that would seem like an ideal focus for accusations of a "government cover-up", if you were that way inclined.

When Destiny 1 came out, my son beat the game and then asked me for a hug. I asked if he was a Titan. He said, "Why?" and I said, "No hugs for hunters."

I found that so funny, I shared that story with Bungie on their facebook and G+ profile.

Tonight, I was playing Destiny 2 and notice that the lead Hunter NPC, Cayde asks people for hugs and no one will hug him.

It'd be kind of cool if that put that in because of my son's request.

One of my other brushes with fame for my son happened on G+, too. Somehow, instead of watching Phil Plait, Pamela Gay and the rest of the gang on Google Hangouts, I somehow joined the feed and could be seen by the other people there. Phil spotted my son, a toddler at the time and called him "The Littlest Astronomer".

Well in some provinces they have a new holiday in February. I just decide to check out what date it falls on and underneath it had the "in the colony of New Brunswick", it has been a while since the province has been called that.

File under "makes you feel good". I had ice all over the windshield while driving. It was annoying, but good thing it was there because I noticed my registration was up. Like 6 months ago, up. Oops.

The NYS DMV is not really all that great and it is a holiday weekend so I though this was going to be a problem. Nope. Go to website, jam in some information, a credit card number and they drop a registration sticker in the mail and give a 10 day temp letter. Nice.

I have no idea how I missed renewing, but it's all fixed.

Sooooo, do you have to tape the temp letter to your windshield?

Our local DMV has improved greatly. They planned on a series of cutbacks, reduced services, few employees, longer lines, outages etc, then asked the local police force for a physical, daily presence for support and assistance. The police said they were not there to provide support and assistance for policy changes, that they were welcome to call 911 in the event of a problem, just like anyone else. The police also suggested that they could hire security.

All of a sudden they put in more staff, more self service options, longer and later hours, a queuing system, a greeter, a way to make appointments, a children's play area, sofas and couches, comfy chairs and any number of things that makes consumers happy. It takes all of 10 minutes to fix common problems, now.

    Funny how that worked out.

(It is somewhat amusing to note that the DMV has two MMA training gyms on either side of them. Nice people as near as I can tell, but you don't accost people in this plaza.)

The University's English Department should have advised them on how to divide the syllables in "perfection."

Maybe the design was by a chemistry professor who thought that "ion" looks okay by itself.

I think the idea was that PERFEC didn't look OK by itself.

"From WINLESS to PERFECT" sounds pretty good on its own.

Almost a year ago, we ordered our eclipse supplies from Amazon: Glasses, Solar Binoculars, and a Solar Filter for the camera. Because I figured they might be hot sellers and wanted to be sure we got them.

A few weeks later, we got a notice from them that the camera filter wasn't certified properly and they were cancelling the order and refunding our money. Except we'd already received it. Works for me, I thought. I even checked with the manufacturer on the internet. They had all the certs. Apparently, they just didn't get around to supplying them to Amazon.

A couple of weeks ago we started getting notices. They were attempting to deliver the filter. Or the delivery failed. Or they were trying again. Or it failed again.

Best I can guess, Marumi finally figured out that Amazon hadn't paid them for stuff they sold and asked for the money. Amazon then started trying to figure out how to deal with that. In any case, no additional filter has arrived. I should probably check my credit card statements.

I've got lots of nice eclipse pics, BTW, even though we didn't go quite far enough to get totality.

Find out why that "ION" is tacked on. There is some reason for it
to be on a separate line. Note that the color of the hyphen matches
the color of "ION", not the color of "PERFECT". That takes a bit of
extra work in making the printing screens.

Hmmmm. There is a car ad currently running on TV in which the
