    Happy Birthday, Simon!
The greatest journey of all time, for all to see
Every mission makes our dreams reality
And our destiny begins with you and me
Through all space and time, the achievement of mankind
As we sail the sea of discovery, on heroes’ wings we fly!

We ended up going out to dinner and running a few errands. Then, he and I went on a walk (well, I walked; he rode his tricycle, which he's almost outgrown) around the block together just the two of us. It's a mile around our block, and it's a very pleasant walk--there are usually a few other people walking, most times of day, whether it's people who live here or people who work in the area. We talked about things. We agreed that taking a walk on a summer evening is a very pleasant thing to do.

This morning for a while my head was empty, not a thought of the garden, the giant pile of wood coming, not tv, no podcasts, and not thinking about certain other projects. Just empty, it is nice to clear the brain like that once and while.

Everyone who said they'd be at Simon's birthday party was there except for two people who messaged me in advance to explain they wouldn't. I'd be happier if more people had showed up, I grant you, but two of his classmates were there, and since we had it at a park, there were a lot of kids to play with. And my sister was there, even if the presence of my brother-in-law seems to indicate that they weren't getting a divorce, which I thought she'd implied to a friend of mine a couple of months ago. All in all, it was a good time, exactly the kind of thing I'd needed. I got to hang out with some of my friends. There were plenty of people to pay attention to Irene, and enough people so no one had to watch Simon too closely to be sure he hadn't broken his neck. One of my friends gave him an omnibus of books by his favourite author, and it meant that he and I had a serious talk about what you do when someone gives you a present you already have--there are five books in the omnibus, and he has four of them already in single editions. And he's going to give those to Irene when she's older!

The idea that we're about to have a kindergartner is a little startling for us.

We consider "first day of school" to have been two years ago! But we might have to transfer schools, as we're house-hunting.

You know those strings of little plastic bags of air they use to cushion packages in the mail? We gave a bunch to our newly-adopted kitten, and she's busily deflating them one by one with her claws. Working hard at it.

    Yes Friends,

Toxoplasmosis is a serious mental health issue, but never fear, it is treatable by the same meds used to treat H. pylori infections.

    I did, too!

One of the things I've promised Simon is that we'll get a cat when we move. Graham's less than thrilled, but it's happening anyway.
