    CosmoQuest Chatroom

    I got an e-mail saying:

    Hey Trebuchet!

Someone (hopefully you!) has signed up to CosmoQuest Chatroom with this email address.

If this was you, simply click the following link and your account will be activated:
    https://cosmoquest.org/chatroom/conf...Na4XnHnBg7NSeh

If you did not sign up, please ignore this email.
First, I had no idea the "CosmoQuest Chatroom" existed, so didn't intentionally sign up for it.

Second, does it, in fact, exist?

Third is this post from ISF:
Someone's (a bot maybe?) trying to log into chat as me, and when I try to log in to tell someone and change my password, I can't log in.

First, can you check and see if I'm registered as beskeptical or beskeptigal or Skeptic Ginger. I can't remember which name I last used. I have the last password I used but it isn't working.

I requested a reset but they've not sent a reply to my email yet.

    Thanks
Can someone please tell me what's going on?

I got such and email, and after having seen this thread first I deleted it. I figure that any new CQ feature described as a chatroom would be announced in the forum.

Maybe this blog post will explain things, but maybe not. It looks like they intend to mail us something about logins in the future, which might be "now". I'd don't know... sigh.

    Hello everyone,

My apologies for the email. We (I) were testing the new chat area software and apparently it ignored my request to not send out emails.

    Very sorry,

This is correct. Sorry for the mess up, we're making massive updates to the site and mistakes happened. Sending out a second email with more info.

I thought changes were limited to holiday weekends and important coder Birthdays and vacations.

    Who's birthday was it?

Okay, at first I was glad the "scammer" had skipped me. Now I'm upset about being left out.

Checked the spambox? Gmail was whining a bit about not being able to verify cosmoquest.org as the original sender.

    Hi everyone,

Let me reiterate our sincerest apologies for all of the weekend's confusion. Anyone who has ever run a forum, or updated code, or done anything related to website design/maintenance knows that sometimes things just don't go according to plan. As Ryan indicated, this was one of those times, and the email messages were sent out.

I want to take this opportunity to give everyone a brief overview of what the plan is.

First - and foremost - the content/layout of our Forums will not be changing at all. Nor will your current login information/credentials. You will continue to log into the forums just as you have always done.

The changes that are currently being implemented are related to the main CosmoQuest site, including having a separate login to our science programs and a NEW chat area.

None of the changes to the main site have gone live yet, so no action is necessary at this time. However, barring any unforeseen difficulties, we WILL be going live with the new system sometime this week, so keep an eye out for an email with information about how to login to the new system and how to access the new chat feature.

Remember, the forum structure and login information will remain UNCHANGED once the new system goes live.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. We are here to help.

As a result of this minor fiasco, I realized there's no linkage from the forum to the main Cosmoquest site. At least not that I see. I only do the forum anyway, but still.

IIRC, there has never been a link back to the main CosmoQuest site from the Forum, so there should be no loss of functionality going forward once the new site goes live.

That being said, is a link to the main CosmoQuest site a feature/enhancement that folks would like to see added here?

Unless I'm mistaken, there always used to be the main Cosmoquest menu bar on top of the forum page. It might have gone missing with the forum move to the forum.cosmoquest.org server recently (ref the most recent "hacking" thread in the Info forum).

That's a relief. Thought I was getting phished. And the URL in the email looked genuine too so it seemed to be a good attempt at phishing.

Main Site Link update: We are in the process of redoing all the menus, and a link back to the main CosmoQuest site will be included once everything is stable...

    Thanks again for everyone's patience!!!

My old links did not work this morning and I had to enter using a Google search. That being said the old links don't seamlessly operate correctly.

Do we need to set up a new account, or should what I use for the forum work?

The chatroom account will be linked to the new Citizen Science apps. The forum accounts are and will continue to be kept separate. If you had an account on the old Citizen Science app then I would say be patient and wait for the emails that will be going out.

If you did not have an account on the Citizen Science app before, then feel free to make an account. Be aware that ALL ACCOUNT PASSWORDS ON THE CITIZEN SCIENCE APP WILL BE RESET VERY SOON.

    Thanks,

Using a tablet, I could not find any link to move in the opposite direction (main site to the forum). The link to do this (at the top) is clearly visible when using a proper computer though.

I've been unable to get into the forum all day, until just now when I tried a link from the cq main page. Hmmm. I think they've changed the URL to a HTTPS one. Without telling anyone. Just great!
