Shortly after the 2001 terror attacks in NYC and DC, they instituted tighter security checks for cockpit personnel flying airliners: they were not allowed to bring aboard any kind of knife.

Airlines carry fire axes in the cockpit.

How do things fly? This explains it all.

Actually they can't: "Heavier-than-air flying machines are impossible." - Lord Kelvin, president, Royal Society, 1895.

The movie Contact: When Jodie comes back from her trip to the other side of the universe, and they doubt that she went anywhere and that the whole thing was a hoax; they build a huge spinny thing that radiated light...surely that wasn't 1990s technolgy, surely that proved alien message was recieved..

There was a scene storyboarded but not used during filming (also appeared in the novelization) where they discovered one it had broken into their food storage and consumed weeks worth of rations.... I think Ridley Scott decided that it made it more 'Alien" to keep it ambiguous. Though given that Ash mentions it's is a silicon based life form, I suppose that it could also have been feeding off bits of the ship itself.
