    Is photon really a particle?

When I try to wrap my head around a single photon which travels for trillions of years without experiencing time or distance, it just frustrates my mind. On the other hand, If i visualize it as a disturbance in the EM field with a specific amount of energy being absorbed or emitted, it kind of makes more intuitive sense to me. So, my question is , do we even need a photon at all to describe the workings of the universe? Or is it simply a convenient model to explain how light works?

Yes, we need the photon concept, and yes, it is simply a convenient model to explain how light works. No "or" there.
