    Lake Toba

    After the ferry disaster on the 18 of June, search and rescue teams discover that Lake Toba is more than three times deeper than they thought is was.

    From 500 meters deep, to deeper than 1500 meters. (Where they think the ferry went down.)

    New sonar has just arrived that should be good for 2000 meter depths.

    Mt question now is;

    Does this change estimates as to the caldera's structural integrity?

    Because I now have a nightmare scenario flowing through my head where an earthquake of any sort causes Lake Toba's caldera to collapse in on itself.

    Do you have any links or sources that cite the 1500m depth, Don? I wouldn't worry too much about an earthquake. It's not like the caldera hasn't been what it is for the past thousands of years, we just now may have learned it's true structure. There have been earthquakes (some quite strong) through that area for eons.

    Wow. 20 metres long and 5 metres wide, carrying over 200 people.

    That's 2 people for every square metre (sounds like 2 decks, so, physically 1 per square metre). But that counts every square metre - including all the areas where people can't be.

    Cj,

    the wiki article on the ferry disaster - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinkin...V_Sinar_Bangun

    Dave, according to reports it seems to have been an unlicensed and illegal business from the ground up.

    Thanks for the link, Big Guy. So sad and scary, isn't it? And to think on top of that, how crazy deep that lake is!!

    Any carbon dioxide hiding in those depths?
    That could be a problem.
