    Launches since the 50s.

The Economist has an excellent visual presentation titled: "The space race is dominated by new contenders". That is one takeaway but there is much more here to observe. Number of military and commercial launches are presented by country over time. Enjoy.

The mid 80's seemed the pivot point.

There seems to be two noteworthy shifts in the 80's: Reduced launches from USSR/Russia and the advent of commercial launches.

To a certain extent the reduced launch numbers were sure to come: Satellite functionality and lifetime were increasing. I think we will start seeing those numbers increase again with deployment of satellite constellations and space tourism which I predict will pay for BFR as Mars colonization efforts flounder.
