    Foods you can take or leave

    You know, the stuff that you'll eat willingly enough if it's put in front of you but wouldn't order as your first choice.

    For me, ham. And sweet potatoes.

    Now that I've offended our Southern members, what's yours?

    Chicken, I guess. I haven't picked anything with chicken in it off a menu for thirty years or so, unless it's a minor component mixed with stuff I like - for instance, a Caesar salad. I'll eat it under those circumstances, or if it's put in front of me in someone else's house.
    Ham's probably in the same category, now you point it out.
    And chocolate - I carry it in the hills for some quick calories, but I'll always order whatever isn't the chocolate dessert.

    I was going to say cake, too, but I actually struggle slightly to eat cakes - mild social duress is required. (Unfortunately, there's a lot of mild social duress around when it comes to baking.)

    For me there are probably a million things like that. Most vegetables: eggplants, broccoli, asparagus, boiled carrots, any kind of fish, lettuce, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, squash, zucchini... And tofu, and miso soup. None of them are particularly disagreeable, just not desirable.

    I guess it's in the presentation for me.

    Onions: Hate them raw, love them grilled or fried or in French onion soup.
    Cucumbers: Only good as pickles.
    Chickpeas: Hate them, love hummus.

    Completely with you on the first two, but I do like a garbonzo or two on a salad. Oh, and dill pickles only, please.

    Chicken or turkey white meat. I prefer dark meat. I don't know why white meat is considered to be better. It's not horrible and I'll eat it, but I grab for the dark meat first.

    I lean slightly in the opposite direction: I prefer white meat...if it's cooked properly. If it's dry and tough, I'll go for the dark meat, too. That's why I brine the birds if I'm to cook them whole. As for why I think the fairer flesh is better: I (narrowly) prefer the texture, it's a bit leaner, and I think it's more amenable to expedient grilling and sautéing. Dark meat needs more time to render its connective tissue but once it does, I agree it's succulent.

    Now, okra I can take or leave at the extremes. In gumbo and jambalaya I think it's both flavorful and essential. Anywhere else, nope...not even fried as many of my fellow Southerners like it.

    Real white chicken tenders are ok and baked chicken breast slices make good sandwiches, but a leg in my hand puts a smile on my face.

    Snaps (green beans) are edible but only my homegrown ;-) I wouldn't buy factory canned.
    Egg salad, I like eggs but for some strange personal quirk I get grossed out by cold egg salad.

    I like liverwurst, too, but the wife does not. I like liver and onions, but the wife does not. When we eat out, if liver and onions is on the menu, I usually order it.

    Scrambled eggs. I'll eat'em if they are what's available, especially if there is hot sauce to be had, but if I'm asked "how do you want your eggs?" scrambled is last on the list. No, wait, I take that back. Anything with undercooked whites ("sunny side up") is absolutely gross.

    Yeah, I would say eggs in general, with the exception of a good omelet. I'm fine with other dishes where eggs are just a component. If I do have eggs, I want them well cooked - definitely not runny.

    Other things:

    Fish and seafood. There are exceptions, but much fish or seafood seems bland, while others have flavors I can tolerate but I don't care for. Then there are the ones I would actively avoid, but that's out of the scope of the question.

    Pork/ham: Sometimes I have eaten really tasty cured ham, but when I get it, it usually is too salty. Pork chops or other pork cuts usually just seem too bland. Maybe you can fix them up with other flavorings, but I've never seen the point.

    Most cakes (and I actively avoid store bought cake, unless it's from a really high class baker - even most specialist shops have frosting made for long-term stability rather than good flavor). On the other hand, I really like a devil's food cake with chocolate frosting or a pineapple upside down cake.

    Most dinner salads: The main issue is that I don't like many of the popular cheesy or goopy dressings (in some cases I strongly dislike the dressing). So the trick for me is to find a dressing that I actually like so that eating a salad becomes an enjoyable experience. Too often, salad eating seems like more of a chore.

    Sorry, "omelet" is just French for "scrambled eggs". And while the whites must be done, the yolk should be runny.

    Juicy roast pork is lovely and seldom seen. Fear of trichinosis has led to pork being overcooked for many decades now.

    Prawns or shrimp or whatever they are called in your region. I can eat them but to me they just taste like rubber. This has made my wife happy for many years when I pass any prawns in my dish onto her. Crabs & crayfish/lobster I just hate.

    What made her even happier is that I used to like catching prawns - drag net in a river estuary & crabs - wading in shallow water and scooping them up or by drop nets. I would cook them and then pass them onto her.

    Don't they say "omelette"? Anyway, my idea of a good omelet is one that always has other stuff with it. The one I usually make at home (if I have eggs around) is similar to a Spanish omelet, but I use mashed potatoes - eggs, mashed potatoes mixed together (I usually just microwave a potato and hand mash it), chopped onion and tomato, cheddar cheese, a little hot sauce to spice it up, a bit of salt, and (if I have any handy) a bit of shredded chicken or bacon pieces (I like the taste of bacon, but I don't enjoy cooking it, so I don't usually have it around), cooked on both sides in a pan until it's a bit like a pancake.

    I forgot to mention I'm not a big fan of sour flavors either. When I eat out, if I get a salad, I'll usually choose an Italian dressing, but it's very hit or miss whether I'll like it. Sometimes it's good, sometimes okay, and sometimes makes the salad inedible for me. At home, I've tried various store bought varieties, ended up giving or throwing a number of them away, but I've found a couple I like. I have one, for instance, that has Parmesan cheese (a cheese I do like) and isn't too sour.

    I have had overcooked prawns in things like prawn cocktails -yuch. But I have had them cooked by experts in restaurants and taken straight from the river and put into the cook pot. I simply find the taste uninteresting and bland. Unless they have been made into belacan (Malaysian shrimp paste) which is very far from bland but is instead overpowering. https://www.seriouseats.com/2010/03/...alm-sugar.html

    It's easy to get rubbery shrimp, and I agree, part of why I'm not a big fan is because of the texture. I also don't really love the flavor if I eat them alone, but I do like them in some dishes, preferably chopped up. Never liked freshwater crawdads (or crayfish). I don't hate lobster, but I'll always go for something else if given a choice.

    Sometimes it’s true that people don’t like things because they haven’t had them done right, but sometimes it’s just a personal thing. I personally hate oysters, and nobody telling me I haven’t had them fresh enough is going to change that. They are just disgusting.

    Definitely a matter of my individual, perhaps odd, taste. Prawns don't do it for me but I like oysters off the shell - usually with a squirt of lemon. Love scallops, not the fake ones, but don't like abalone. Can't stand crayfish or crabs. And I have had all of these fresh from the water.

    Love scrambled eggs, but I pick out the germinal disc (small white blobs) before scrambling them (another idiosyncrasy). Just don't like white specks in my scrambled eggs. As a kid I called them chicken buggers which ruined me for life. I'll even pick them out of an egg before frying and have become skilled at avoiding breaking the yoke. Overeasy is preferred.

    Like steamed or boiled shrimp too but 5 minutes max on boiling to make them "right", they need to be seasoned with "Old Bay" or similar product with a little vinegar added to the boiling pan. The pre-cooked frozen shrimp at the store seem a bit on the raw side to me so I'll boil those for 1 minute before serving.

    Oysters are ok too if done well (fried) or forced open on a grill where they cook in their own juices. Cocktail sauce is a must.
