    The Big Bang Industry

    Someone mentioned the Big Bang Industry and it got me wondering what it is and how it makes its money. Are they in the business of making new universes? If so who buys them? Is this the next step up from a luxury yacht, a private jet and starting your own space company?

    And how many people are in the business? Apparently, I have missed out on some of the monetary rewards available but I gather there is big bucks to be made.

    And do they have any competitors? I seem to remember that Steady State merged with Quasi and then went out of business. (But I think there is a community movement to keep it going.) And Big Bounce are struggling after they lost some of their advertisers and investors. Any other players in the market?

    And I have heard rumours they are doing some sort of deal with Black Holes Incorporated ... maybe something to do with recycling their old products?

    Now that the universe has already been created, I suspect they make most of their money from service contracts and preventative maintenance.

    Though I do like the idea of private universes. You know the old joke about what do you get for someone who has everything: a place to put it. Well, now you can give them a place to put it.

    So the Big Crunch is built in obsolescence? Cunning business model. As soon as your universe is out of warranty it collapses. I assume that is why the Big Bounce feature is disabled - just like the terminator genes in modified crops the Big Bang industry don't want your universe reseeding itself.

    There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

    I want to file a grievance.

    Zero point energy--but we can't get at it.

    We can't go FTL, but the universe did (during inflation)

    We can't get cheap proton-proton fusion, but stars can.

    We can't get anti-gravity--but the universe gets it with Dark Energy.

    Stars too far apart to explore easily.

    Clearly a manufacturers defect

    Maybe the Big Bang wasn't intended to benefit us. We could be just a step along the way to machine intelligence which will better able to take advantage of the available features.

    The Big Bang Industry sells Universes As A Service. Basically, if you're in need of a Universe, you can use one from them for free. But you'll have to put up with all the advertising and they will collect your data. They know exactly which planets you have visited at all times. Also, when they make changes to a Universe, they cannot guarantee backwards compatibility.

    Actually, my 4 year old son just solved this mystery.

    He told me today that "after the big star exploded, they put the pieces in the dumpster". So basically, the Big Bang Industry is a recycling plant of universal proportions.

    That's actually correct. Many of those broken star pieces are recycled into planets and 4 year old boys. We are all (recycled) star stuff.
