    Nasa's Maven spacecraft began orbiting Mars on Sunday, on a mission to study how the Red Planet's climate changed over time from warm and wet to cold and dry.

    "Based on observed navigation data, congratulations. Maven is now in orbit," said Dave Folta of Nasa's Goddard Space Flight Center.

    The unmanned orbiter has traveled more than 10 months and 442 million miles (711 million kilometers) to reach Mars for a first-of-its kind study of the planet's upper atmosphere

    MAVEN's successful insertion into its Capture Orbit marks the start of six weeks of in-orbit commissioning dedicated to orbital maneuvers and instrument preparations for science operations. A total of up to eight maneuver are planned to place MAVEN into its science orbit of 150 by 6,200 Kilometers with a period of 4.5 hours.

    These maneuvers are divided into Periapsis Lowering Maneuvers (PLM) to lower the ~380km low-point of the orbit to 150km spread out over four engine maneuvers that are performed around apoapsis on September 24, October 5, 23 and 30. Three Period Reduction Maneuvers are planned on September 26, October 2 and 9 to decrease the high-point of the orbit from over 44,000 Kilometers to 6,200 Kilometers. A final Orbit Trim Maneuver is planned on November 7 to put the spacecraft into its science orbit.

    After 10-month voyage across more than 400 million miles of empty space, NASA's MAVEN spacecraft reached Mars on Sept. 21st 2014. Less than 8 hours later, the data started to flow.

    "Our Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrograph (IUVS) obtained these false-color images of Mars on Sept. 22nd," says Nick Schneider who leads the instrument team at the University of Colorado. "They trace the distribution of hydrogen and oxygen in the Martian atmosphere."

    NASA's MAVEN spacecraft has provided scientists their first look at a storm of energetic solar particles at Mars and produced unprecedented ultraviolet images of the tenuous oxygen, hydrogen and carbon coronas surrounding the Red Planet, said University of Colorado Boulder Professor Bruce Jakosky, the mission's principal investigator.

    In addition, the new observations allowed scientists to make a comprehensive map of highly variable ozone in the Martian atmosphere underlying the coronas, he said. The spacecraft entered Mars' orbit Sept. 21 and is in the process of lowering its orbit and testing its instruments.

    NASA's Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) spacecraft has observed two unexpected phenomena in the Martian atmosphere: an unexplained high-altitude dust cloud and aurora that reaches deep into the Martian atmosphere.

    The presence of the dust at orbital altitudes from about 93 miles (150 kilometers) to 190 miles (300 kilometers) above the surface was not predicted. Although the source and composition of the dust are unknown, there is no hazard to MAVEN and other spacecraft orbiting Mars.

    "If the dust originates from the atmosphere, this suggests we are missing some fundamental process in the Martian atmosphere," said Laila Andersson of the University of Colorado's Laboratory for Atmospherics and Space Physics (CU LASP), Boulder, Colorado.

    The cloud was detected by the spacecraft's Langmuir Probe and Waves (LPW) instrument, and has been present the whole time MAVEN has been in operation. It is unknown if the cloud is a temporary phenomenon or something long lasting. The cloud density is greatest at lower altitudes. However, even in the densest areas it is still very thin. So far, no indication of its presence has been seen in observations from any of the other MAVEN instruments.

    Possible sources for the observed dust include dust wafted up from the atmosphere; dust coming from Phobos and Deimos, the two moons of Mars; dust moving in the solar wind away from the sun; or debris orbiting the sun from comets. However, no known process on Mars can explain the appearance of dust in the observed locations from any of these sources.

    NASA’s Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) spacecraft has been in orbit around Mars for one Earth year. MAVEN was launched to Mars on Nov. 18, 2013 from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida and successfully entered Mars’ orbit on Sept. 21, 2014.

    “The success of the mission so far is a direct result of the incredibly hard work of everybody who is working and has worked on MAVEN. This one year at Mars reflects the tremendous efforts over the preceding dozen years,” said Bruce Jakosky, MAVEN’s principal investigator from the University of Colorado’s Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics in Boulder.

    Some of the highlights of the first action-packed year include:

    Performing the orbit insertion maneuver
    Surviving the encounter with Comet Siding Spring
    Commissioning the spacecraft
    Carrying out ten months of observations during MAVEN’s primary mission

    Most importantly, MAVEN has been able to observe the variable energy coming in from the Sun (in the form of solar extreme ultraviolet (EUV) light and the solar wind), the response of the upper atmosphere to it, and the resulting escape of gas to space. Observations made throughout the first year in orbit allowed us to quantify each of these. Observations during solar storms showed that the loss rate appears to have gone up substantially (by maybe 20 times) during these events, even for the moderate storms that MAVEN saw. The rate of loss of gas to space is very small today, only around a couple hundred grams per second; at this rate, it would take a billion years or so to remove the present-day thin atmosphere. But all of the loss processes would have been more significant early in Mars history, when the solar EUV and the solar wind were more intense, so the loss rate would have been correspondingly greater as well. It's clear that loss to space is occurring today and that it must have occurred throughout Mars' history.

    The spacecraft entered orbit on 21 September 2014 to figure out what happened to Mars' atmosphere, and how that relates to the planet's transition from a warm, wet past to its inhospitable current state state.

    MAVEN, which stands for Mars Atmosphere Volatile EvolutioN Mission, is not equipped with a standard visible light camera, but it has an ultraviolet spectrograph imager that is used to measure the composition of Mars' atmosphere. Mission managers were able to rotate the imager, which sits at the tip of a 1.2-meter boom, back towards the spacecraft’s body and collect 21 frames that were stitched together to create a partial selfie. Not all of the spacecraft can be seen due to the imager’s limited rotation range.
