We had about ten minutes of very strong straight-line winds Saturday night. My wife called me to look out the front door. The trees across the street were bent way over.

The next morning I found out the winds got our red maple. Three leaders were snapped, one (about 12' long)completely and two others (about 8') hanging on barely. We've got a tree person coming today to trim the maple back. It's my wife's favorite so we'll keep it, even with the damage.

It suffered the loss of one major leader during Ike, so it should survive this.

(Interestingly, one horizontal branch about 1.5" thick seems to have been twisted almost 90deg. The branch - which is about 8 feet up - doesn't show any twisting, but it's orientation has definitely changed.)

Warm, cloudy, and extremely humid here for the past few days with threats of heavy rain but nothing locally yet. The tropical leftovers that's heading up the middle of the US keeps pumping up these sticky conditions here in the east but at least it's not Hot! only in mid 80's so far.

Another sunny breezy day here this afternoon trying to prune a grapevine without killing it completely. It looks like maybe some showers of the weekend and some showers at the end of next week.

We gots the rains! But we were spared the worst, as I check the radar it looks like that town in Maryland might get hit a 3rd time with training heavy rains, it's close by. Almost 3 inches here but the temps are cool/mild, cloudy with heavy rains just to the north. When it rains it pours, but it's not too salty. Mild temps expected all week here, no rain, perfect conditions for working outside, a lucky break..

Winter has really hit here now with lots of showers and a few storms, but we are still well behind our yearly rainfall average. The temperature has also dropped sharply. Yesterdays maximum temperature was only 14.1C (57F) which was the coldest day here for 9 years. The minimum overnight was 4.7C (40F), the coldest minimum so far this year.

Starting to clear up here, i think I will spend most of the day with some spuds in the garden.
