NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the House of Representatives of the Eighty-fifth Legislature of the State of South Dakota, the Senate concurring therein, that the South Dakota Legislature urges that instruction in the public schools relating to global warming include the following:

(1) That global warming is a scientific theory rather than a proven fact;
(2) That there are a variety of climatological, meteorological, astrological, thermological, cosmological, and ecological dynamics that can effect [sic] world weather phenomena and that the significance and interrelativity of these factors is largely speculative; and
(3) That the debate on global warming has subsumed political and philosophical viewpoints which have complicated and prejudiced the scientific investigation of global warming phenomena; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Legislature urges that all instruction on the theory of global warming be appropriate to the age and academic development of the student and to the prevailing classroom circumstances.

Of course this begs the question, "Is there such a thing as good astrology?"

This legislature deserves to be ridiculed as much as Indiana's was for trying to legislate the value of pi.

That's not how it works. It's well accepted by the astrological community and people in general. Since you are making a claim, it is up to you to show why astrology is wrong. :lol:

It passed 36 to 30.):

" A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION, Calling for a balanced approach for instruction in the public schools relating to global climatic change.


WHEREAS, evidence relating to global climatic change is complex and subject to varying scientific interpretations; and


WHEREAS, there are a variety of climatological and meteorological dynamics that can affect world weather phenomena, and the significance and interrelativity of these factors remain unresolved; and


WHEREAS, the debate on global warming has subsumed political and philosophical viewpoints, which has complicated and prejudiced the scientific investigation of global climatic change phenomena:


NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the House of Representatives of the Eighty-fifth Legislature of the State of South Dakota, the Senate concurring therein, that the South Dakota Legislature urges that all instruction in the public schools relating to global climatic change be presented in a balanced and objective manner and be appropriate to the age and academic development of the student and to the prevailing classroom circumstances.".Note, they've solved the problem of whether to put the period inside or outside the quotation mark. :)

South Dakota School of Mines & Technology professors say they are already doing exactly that, so no biggie.

I'm sure all the scientists at the various colleges and universities in South Dakota are teaching about climate change in exactly that way.

Of course, teaching climate change in exactly that way is probably not what the authors of the bill intended; they probably intended that it be taught as a speculative hypothesis, only supported by the faith of a particular community. Of course, teaching almost anything except climate change and evolution in that way would probably see some of them reaching for some more persuasive measures (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_methods_of_torture).

As a recent graduate of School of Mines in Rapid City I think this is the exact opposite of that state schools policy.

There was little or no mention of global warming in an alarmist sense. We did discuss historical climate change and environmental issues, but as soon as someone mentioned Al Gore or anything in that vein the profs would basically state that they weren't preachers and not in the habit of presenting speculation as fact.

In fact, I learned about why extrapolation can be a bad thing from studying different climate models that have been presented in recent years.
