View Full Version : Cozy home space projects.

Back in the sixties, television featured a
guy with his home built weather satellite
receiving gear. The output from the radio was
amplified to 100v or so and applied to a
stylus touching a revolving drum of aluminium
foil. Gosh, I wanted one myself to play with!

A few years later at a physics exhibition, I
came across a stand from a school with sixth
formers showing off their set up and they used
an oscilloscope with polaroid camera to get
the pictures. At least I could touch the gear
this time. And a few years later I met a
physics teacher who had his design in a radio

Over the years the ATM section in Sky &
Telescope featured many fantastic set ups
that again brought on the envy. But I got on
with my own meanderings.

Now this lunchtime I have to watch a story of
some guy in Yorkshire who put a digital
camera with radio and gps into a small box
hoisted 22 miles by a weather balloon. Not
sure if the pictures were radioed down or he
had to recover the gear but there he was cozy
in his den with great images on a large flat
screen TV.

Maybe my green tinge will be gone by morning!

It seems to have a name:
...Wikipedia defines augmented reality as “a term for a live direct or indirect view of a physical real-world environment whose elements are merged with-, or augmented by virtual computer-generated imagery – creating a mixed reality.”...

Sorry, wrong thread.

He had to recover the camera to download the pics.

There are other people/groups doing the same in the US. Really cool.

Cool is an understatement, IMHO :) Here's djellison's thread (http://www.bautforum.com/off-topic-babbling/78296-not-quite-space-high-altitude-balloons.html) on his fun endeavors.
