Notice the white object near the horizon. The color doesn't seem to go with the terrain, could it be Spirits parachute?

It's a potato chip. One of the engineers was munching while packing the rover into the lander and dropped one in.

No, it's the parachute. The heat shield is on the far side of the crater. Scroll down to the "Bonneville and Beyond" entry on this page, (http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/press/spirit/20040311a.html) which has a panorama showing both the parachute and heat shield.
