OK, the answer to this is probably very simple but my brain is lost. I can't figure out why some of the big ole envelops are red and others are blue.

I think the red ones indicate a hot thread (many replies) compared to a cold thread (few or no replies).

Does that sound right?

Yep. In the page listing the threads in the (sub)forum, look at the bottom of the page. There's an "Icon Legend" there explaining it. IMHO the trigger for making it a "hot" thread could be set a little less sensitive, it seems to be quite quick in designating some thread as "hot".

Fraser, the BA, Antoniseb or ToSeek can adjust that, I believe. It does seem rather sensitive. It tweaked after 6 replies on one I saw, though on another one with 6 replies it was cold/blue, so I guess it depends on replies over a duration?
