www.badastronomy.com has been loading a blank page today. Not my computer or connection, I think, since it has happened on two different ones of each.

When I try to go to my old www.badastronomy.com (http://www.badastronomy.com) bookmark, I get a page saying there is an error. Is the old domain no longer forwarding to the Discover blog? Does this mean the original Bad Astonomy site (in all its retro look glory) is gone now?

I get the same thing on my Mac using FireFox, Safari, Internet Explorer. Looks like something's wrong.

To get to the old site, http://www.badastronomy.com/index.html works for me.

http://www.badastronomy.com gives me a blank page. I thought that has been redirecting to http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy (http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/) for a long while, since near the Discovery blog founding.

Works for me.

Actually I'll revise that heavily, it worked in Chrome but not in Firefox.

Checking with lynx shows a 500 internal server error, which I suspect Chrome is replacing with a cached version that redirects to the new blog.
http://www.badastronomy.com/index.html is the old site without redirect.

http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/ works. www.badastronomy.com (linked from the forum banner) does not.

There is this, at the bottom of the page:

This page last modified Friday, 16-Apr-2010 01:50:20 CDT

Wondering if the modification has now made it inaccessible to you through the old bookmark.

Has an administrator changed the banner link to bad astronomy above? It used to link me to Phil's blog but it doesn't anymore. The link seems to be just badastronomy.com rather than http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/

Has something changed or can this be fixed or am I missing something (entirely possible...that has happened once before :) )?

Pete

I think the banner link was always to badastronomy.com, but that re-directed to the Discover Magazine blog. Something seems to have happened to the url.

www.badastronomy.com used to redirect to the Discover Magazine blog, something has hosed that re-direct.

There's another thread on this in the Feedback subforum, with about the same number of answers. The badastronomy.com redirect to the blog url isn't working for some reason.

Is there any discernable relationship between the BA blog and this forum?

If I'm not mistaken, the badastronomy.com (http://www.badastronomy.com/index.html) website has also moved to rackspace, like BAUT. I guess during the move the trick that was used to forward some traffic to the Discover Magazine blog (http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/) was lost.

See also The link to "Bad Astronomy" (http://www.bautforum.com/showthread.php/103191-The-link-to-quot-Bad-Astronomy-quot) in the Forum Introductions and Feedback forum.

Well, if I clicked on a banner for Bad astronomy I would want to be taken to the Bad Astronomy website not some Blog.

Bad Astronomy is now the blog though

Is there any discernable relationship between the BA blog and this forum?Discernable? I dunno about that...

Every time the BA updates his blog, a post is made to a test forum here at BAUT

I can get to the blog directly from my browser (IE), but not from the banner.

Oops, the other thread is in the Bad Astro Stories subforum, not Feedback, etc.

You were right the first time. And the second time! There are three threads now.

I'm going to report my own thread so perhaps the mods will merge the three. The Bad Astro Stories forum is probably the best place, although OTB probably gets read more.

or keep all three threads, but close two of them with a link to the last.

Is there any discernable relationship between the BA blog and this forum?

Among them, I can discern the link from the BAUT Forum main page to the Bad Astronomer's blog (when it is working): clink on Bad Astronomy in the left third of the boxing-astronaut image. I can discern a reference to blog articles in the: Rules For Posting To This Board (http://www.bautforum.com/showthread.php?p=564845): "D) In the Bad Astronomy Stories section only, focused, polite discussion of topics or issues brought up in the originating post." I discern that a proprietor of BAUT Forum (http://www.bautforum.com/showgroups.php) is the Bad Astronomer, author of the Bad Astronomy Blog. I discern that plenty of articles in this subsection are about postings made in the Bad Astronomy Blog. I discern loads of old articles by an administrator member who also authors the blog. I discern the recommendation link from the Bad Astronomy Blog to BAUT Forum in the Blogroll section. A little digging in public records would probably reveal the ownership ties.

Is there some other discernible relationship you expect but don't find?

Well, if I clicked on a banner for Bad astronomy I would want to be taken to the Bad Astronomy website not some Blog.

I'm different. I want to be taken to the active, current Bad Astronomy content by the Bad Astronomer, not some old frozen-in-time formerly active website.

That's not saying the archived material can go away. Some rare times I want to go back and find old stuff. It just doesn't have to be as easy as getting to the current stuff.

I came to this forum, before the merger, becaause I used to look at the BA's site. But the BA hasn't posted here for ages and hasn't chosen to mirror his blog (and comments) here. Yes I see the links from here to the blog, but I do wonder if the BA has lost interest in the forum.

I've merged the three threads* and left temporary redirects.

Thrilled enough to post in the forum?
Maybe I don't monitor the "proper" threads, but I haven't seen a post from him here in ages. :(

It would be nice if Phil would "occasionally" (perhaps once a week...once a month??) post to his own board, however he has made the decision to expand his horizons by posting to his blog, and his new TV endeavour....whatever that "is", and he simply does not have the time to spend here.

eta...re-reading this, I didn't intend for it to sound as snarky as it reads.

Why not keep all threads bare? But then we'd be threadbare... !

Apparently, as Phil owns it, he's simply updating it regularly to redirect to his latest blog.

That seems kosher to me.

HenrikOlsen

The server was returning a "500 Internal error" response at the time, it looks like this was fixed.

There's no need for Phil to update anything, as the link to the front page of the blog is static.
