Hey guys and girls, im a new member and only recently started taking my interest in the universe seriously. Could anyone please confirm to me what the bright object is in the west north western sky? Im in the uk and its clearly visible from 20:00 onwards every few weeks. Is it Venus?

Venus is in the evening sky now and is very bright.

Yes it is (http://www.heavens-above.com/skychart.aspx?SL=1&SN=1&lat=51.247&lng=-0.761&loc=Aldershot&alt=76&tz=GMT).
And welcome, I'm sure you'll find plenty of other usefull links around here.

Heh, was ready to paste the same link. It doesn't seem to preserve the time you chose, showing current Aldershot sky instead. So, Big Tony, enter the time when you see the object in the bottom of the screen. IE put 20 in the hour field.

And welcome to BAUT, btw!

ETA: and if you click HOME, and bookmark that page, you'll always have a quick reference for what's currently in the Heavens Above you. :)

A great FREE program is Stellarium.org

Runs on nearly anything and will show you what's in the sky for your particular location.

Really helps when you see something like this...

Ditto on Stellarium. It's, well, stellar.

I've been watching Venus in the evening sky for about a month now. I never thought it could stay visible for so long!

When will venus 'disappear' again?
