Hello,

A few months ago (maybe six, seven or so?) I found on the web an article by a Russian scientist of some sort that described how the Soviets tracked the Apollo space craft. I have a vague memory of the title being something like "We watched Apollo land on the moon."

In the article they described how they received the radio signal from Apollo (XI I believe) and how they could listen to the audio but that they had trouble decoding the video because the signal was too weak if I remember correctly.

Unfortunately I can no longer seem to find this article. I'm wondering whether anyone else is aware of what I'm talking about and could possibly help me find it again?

Now, I'm not entirely sure the article was actually in English or if it was in Russian. I don't know Russian but I have used Google Translate to machine-translate Russian webpages before and possibly this was one such instance, and that could explain why I'm having trouble locating it now.

Thanks in advance!

Aleksey Leonov describes Russian tracking of Apollo 11 about 1/3 of the way through the video. (then the poor guy rambles on about crop circles toward the end)

With a similar text article.

Thanks! Unfortunately this was not what I'm searching for but it was an interesting read nonetheless!

The article I'm looking for was possibly by one of the radio operators, and as far as I recall, not by a famous person like Leonov. It was not an interview but an article where they described various details of the tracking and I seem to recall it mentioned somethign about the video reception, like maybe they managed to decode a few frames or such, but that the signal was too weak. It was not a technical article though, and I think it was mostly a response to the moon hoax baloney. I would really like to read it again. How stupid of me not to take greater care of preserving it when I had it...

ejstans,

You might want to go ahead and create a new thread on the same topic in the Conspiracy Theory forum (http://www.bautforum.com/forumdisplay.php/19-Conspiracy-Theories). Though the primary function of that forum is to debate things like the Moon Landing Hoax, most of our members most knowledgable about Apollo hang out there. Just make clear you are not advocating a conspiracy and tell 'em I said it was OK.

The originally posted article (from Novosti Kosmonavtiki) is here (http://www.novosti-kosmonavtiki.ru/content/numbers/271/03.shtml). It's in Russian; oddly enough, their encoding seems to have changed and my current browser doesn't read their older postings in the right characters. There was an old BAUT thread here (http://www.bautforum.com/showthread.php/20447-Soviet-tracking-of-Apollo-missions) including an automated translation.
