This pioneering technology is the silver bullet that will make large-scale ash disruption history. The ash detector will enable our aircraft to see and avoid the ash cloud, just like airborne weather radars and weather maps make thunderstorms visible.

It's a little infra red video camera. Question is does it work as claimed?

It seems people are serious about it. BBC has more details. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/10234553.stm)

Hmmm. We mentioned this technology in the Icelandic volcano thread a while back, according to the easyJet pressrelease (http://corporate.easyjet.com/en/media/latest-news/news-year-2010/04-06-2010.aspx), It is the Nicarnica (http://www.nicarnica.com/) AVOID system developed at NILU by Dr. Prata (http://www.nilu.no/index.cfm?lan_id=3).
