We have a good idea of how the Earth, the moon, and even the solar system formed, but I have never heard a solid theory on the formation of our galaxy. Does anyone have a good estimate on when and how it formed? Was our galaxy significantly different when it was very young from what it's like now? What are the evolutionary stages of a spiral galaxy like the milky Way?
thanks,

There are a number of theories about this.

The first two have some "bad astronomy" in them. The last is an unofficial (and outdated) mirror site of Nick Strobel's Astronomy Notes. Go here (http://www.astronomynotes.com/index.html)to the official page, and here (http://www.astronomynotes.com/ismnotes/chindex.htm) for the page on the Milky Way. Nick Strobel's Astronomy Notes are some of the best web pages concerning introductory astronomy on the web, in my opinion.
