The picture is obviously faked: look how the shadows don't line up...

(Grin! I had that same model kit when I was young; the "shadows" are molded right into the moon's surface!)

Actually, look at the shadow below Phil's right ear (our left, in the photo). His head and ear cast a distinctive shadow on the wall behind him. This is the result of a near-phase lighting from the photographer's flash. The shadow, as we see it, closely follows our view of the contour that's casting it.

The absence of any such shadows anywhere in any of the Aldrin egress photos is how we know the hot spot on Buzz Aldrin's boot was not produced by a supplementary point light source.

It was wonderful, I was there! Phil was very informative and quite witty. He was also gracious in chatting with all of us geek groupies that wandered from the lecture to the book signing table with him. My only complaint was that they did not give him enough time to speak. One hour per topic is not enough especially if the into from the planetarium director goes a bit long. All in all though a very good time and definetly worth the three hour drive I made to get there. /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif

I wonder if our planetarium here in town would host him.
