I don't know how many times we've told them to stay away from bars, especially out in the dark. and just look now - so may of them are turning red before their time, and even shutting down.

Meanwhile, red galaxies (which contain more older stars) had as many as 50% of their members hosting bars. Even more striking, when the sample was further broken down into grouping by overall galaxy brightness, the team found that dimmer red galaxies were even more likely to harbor bars, peaking at ~70%! This is logical and in accord with your more inebriative analgoy. First comes the new homes and businesses, then the bars are established.
