View Full Version : Tidally-locked and Magnetic Fields

Is it possible to have a magnetic field that could protect against solar-wind like Earths on a planet orbiting a red-dwarf star that as an orbital period of a week to three weeks?

Would it be strong enough to defend against stellar wind?

Depends on the red dwarf. Get a powerful flare star and even the atmo may not keep you from getting fried periodically. With a quieter star, I would imagine that most of the screening would still be by the atmo as opposed to the magnetic field. The poles would have to be screened by the atmo, since they would be particle scoops, effectively.

There shouldnt be a problem with the solar wind, barring the occasional big honkin' flare
