Chuck Yeager blasts NASA safety record (http://www.floridatoday.com/news/space/stories/2004a/spacestoryN429YEAGER.htm)

Yeager, the legendary test pilot who served on the panel that investigated the 1986 Challenger disaster, told a crowd of aerospace experts at the 41st Space Congress that last year's Columbia accident sickened him because of its similarity to the first one 17 years earlier.

"It just kind of makes you sick when you look at people not paying attention to what is going on outside the aircraft," Yeager said, pointing to the repeated incidents of foam insulation from the shuttle external fuel tank damaging orbiter heat shields over 20 years of missions before the same problem doomed Columbia and seven astronauts last year.

"That should have been a warning to a lot of people," he said. "The way the hierarchy and bureaucracy at NASA works, it wasn't. Hopefully, they've learned their lesson."

Great article.

I like his thinking. Too bad he never speaks his mind. Retired generals never do.

"Maybe they ought to stick to unmanned space exploration because they sure as hell aren't very good at flying safely."
