View Full Version : Request: Clan of the Kiloroot

Guys, guys, I am really trying to earn my "Order of Kilopi" stripes but it's going to take me several years at my current posting rate :(

I propose the addition of an interim ranking: The Clan of the Kiloroot! (i.e. 1000xsqrt(2))

You may ask: Why choose the square root of 2 and not just any other irrational number?

1) According to wiki, the square root of 2 was the first number to be proved irrational (makes sense)
2) It has been calculated to over 200 billion digits. The only constant calculated to a greater accuracy is pi.

and finally
3) I am very close to 1414 posts. :P

Have mercy and throw a bone out for a fellow lover of math!

My Maths teacher showed us the proof of the irrationality of root 2. I can't remember it though. I pretty sure it didn't involve showing root 2 supporting homeopathy.

Legend has it that the first man who proved sqrt(2) was irrational paid the ultimate price for his heresy when he was thrown overboard by the Pythagoreans.

I'm good with it - I like having a bit of fun with rankings.

Then perhaps make one 2012*, "Baktunian". In honor of all the, ... , well, fun. :)

*) I'm not suggesting to mathematically replace 1 with 2012, nor 2011.9999999999

HEY! Not only is your 2012 suggestion not aligned with our previously established mathematical precedent, I am also over SIX HUNDRED posts away! /cringe

Square root of two... the first of what would prove to be an infinite number of irrationals!

Discovered geometrically in ancient Greece, with a proof of its irrationality recorded in Euclid's Elements, it is the godfather of Trigonometry.

(ok, I made that last part up, but still)

Post count is extremely important. So are user ranks on internet forums.

The only difference between user ranks on internet forums and merit badges from the Boy Scouts is that merit badges reflect some kind of merit.

Counting posts is like counting stars in the sky. Pretty pointless.

And next you're going to deny that you just posted that to get your count one closer to 3,142? :)

555 - Order of Counters. Or 7555, with lower carbon footprint.

Hahahahahahahaha!

It's funny because stars are points.

As much as I like the phi reference, it's not nearly as "atomic" as sqrt(2) or e. :P

Serially, if you graduate the gradient up the long tortuous route to the present, distant, monolithic Devil's Tower, you lower the ionization energy for uncontemplated, gratuitous, increment-oriented consumptions of ASCII and patience. There should be many, many posts left behind, (excepting catalyst posts enabling reactions between qualified POVs).

Have the post count displayed in hexadecimal and give out ranks for having reached F's: F, FF, FFF, FFFF, etc.

Let the ATM'ers figure that one out.

Or just turn the post count off.

No, not really.

555 - Order of Counters. Or 7555, with lower carbon footprint.

555 is a timer. 7490, 7493, 74390, 74393, 74160, 74192, 4017, 4020, 4040 and 4060 are counters. :)

kiloi i1000 - for lurkers

Let's use a complex number R+j*W, where W is number of written posts, and R is number of read posts.

An major benefit is that ATM-ers land pretty high up on imaginary axis, as for them W>>R.
