From a Chandra press release: Just in time for Valentine’s Day comes a new image of a ring — not of jewels — but of black holes. I am a bit confused: We look at pictures of "Black holes" very bright and full of colour, but there is by definition no light escaping "real black holes"? If there is then why call it "black"?

Most of the colour in the image comes from other sources (stars). The black holes are shown in pink as they are detected as X-ray sources. The X-rays are radiated from matter falling into the black hole, not the black hole itself which is ... black.
