The arguments leading to cosmological conclusions are varied and extensive, backed by reams of studies in many different disciplines, and the conclusions remain tentative at best, but the best we can do so far. Yes, it's my understanding that deviations from the cosmological principle as a possible replacement for dark energy are taken seriously as something worth investigating. We know the cosmological principle is not literally true, so the question must emerge as to whether or not it is being treated sufficiently well in dark energy models that invoke the cosmological principle. I don't know what progress it has led to, this paper sounds like a good starting point.
