Where do the neutrons form when you have a Hydrogen Fusion Reaction in the core of a star. He has an atomic mass of about 4, H has an atomic mass of 1.008.

During a p-p collision, one proton changes into a neutron and emits a positron and a neutrino, and results in the formation of deuterium. IIRC, this step has a particularly low cross section (long time constant)
