View Full Version : Getting serious about HST robotic servicing

NASA Watch has a link to the NASA draft requirements for the HST servicing vehicle (HST Robotic Vehicle = HRV). Someone has been working fast to get this 157-page document to this state! It is still a draft, including working asides like (we need to fill in the right reference document). Quick perusal shows interesting things - such as inclusion of the COSTAR--> COS exchange as a requirement, specifying that the HRV be able to make four rendezvous/capture attempts, and ability to do so up to a year after launch and grab HST even in an unpowered state. One might also infer that they have a rather particular set of hardware in mind since a distinct conceptual sketch is shown as well. It's also interesting to see how the specification of autonomous operations is developing, with requirement for live video and contingency shutdown of critical events, but otherwise proceeding on its own with ground interaction at various Authority-To-Proceed (ATP) points.
