The electron shells in orbit around an atom are designated K,L,M... What do these letters stand for? Who originated these designations? I can't find any reference to its origins in books or the web.

Now, the only thing left is why start with K?

Similar to the reason early programming used large numbers in thier numbering. Just in case.

Another way of looking at it is ....if you slide over the hydrogen box in the periodic table, adjacent to the helium box, you have the energy level diagram....only it's pretty much upside down and backwards left to right. You learn to see the seven pairs of groups ! and 2 as s orbitals filling.....the rows of 10 transition elements as d orbitals filling....the 6 by 5 section of p orbitals near the metal/nonmetal dividing line....and two rows of f electrons filling in the lanthanides and actinides. The symmetry is quite pronounced.
