I was away from these forums for about 2 years but now that I'm back I find that the same quality (if not better) is preserved. So, here goes to all our dear mods who are working tirelessly to make sure threads are closed at the right time and users banned according. This is specially important for users who post ATM or CT and then do not back up their points on time. What better way to get them to realize they must respond to questions on time than by banning them for a week.

Anarchy will only bring destruction therefore rules are important for anything to function properly. And when it comes to the breed of mods who enforce the laws on time, every time BAUTforum can really say it has the best ones.

Good job and Thank you!

I'm glad to see a thread started in Feedback that's complimentary to the mods for a change. You know, there's no law stating they have to politely put up with the accusations and abuse they allow against them, and without removing posts as a result. To me, this speaks loudly that moderation here is an attempt to support high forum quality, rather than a power trip, as is often implied or outright asserted.

There are a lot of angry, confrontational people online today looking to pick a fight over almost anything said because ....well ....I guess they just feel better venting. Go to YouTube and read the rude, inflammatory comments that are made there regarding almost any video. That's what you'd see here if a tight rein wasn't kept on decorum.

My sentiments also.. the tenor is correct. I like the decorum... wearing pearls and speaking politely... it should be easy.

The work done by the moderating team is often unseen and thankless.. I support anything that pushes back the anarchy...

You know, there's no law stating they have to politely put up with the accusations and abuse they allow against them, and without removing posts as a result.

\Swift briefly delurks\
There may be no law (or rule) that states this, but personally I feel that is part of my responsibilities, to put up with it. If the moderators can't demonstrate how to be polite on an Internet forum, we can't much ask others to do the same.

One of the costs of that came to fruition last week, when I frankly had enough. In one of the recent Feedback threads, a member or members wrote of a "right" to complain. I have no problem with the semantics; Feedback exists on BAUT to give members this "right" to complain. But the steady barrage, which seemed to reach a peak last week, was finally too much for me. I take what I do here (and in the real world) very personally, that's one of the reasons I can be so committed to it. But all of the accussations of being a evil, overzealous, egomaniacal, biased, power-mad control freak finally got to me. I envoked my right to take a break from being the target. I appologize to my fellow mods for the extra burden I've placed on them.

I was extremely hesitant to post this; I do not wish to appear whinny or complainy, or to appear that I am fishing for complements. The only reason I delurked was to say to The_Radiation_Specialist and the other who have posted that I appreciate your thoughts. I don't know if the rest of my sabatical will be hours or weeks, but I suspect I'll be back.

Thank you all...

Constructive complaints are fine, but there is such a thing as "too much".

Especially when it's clear that some of those doing the complaining don't really want 'fairness' but the right to post what they like when they like and accept no responsibility for it. I think Swift and the other mods do a good job. When the complainers have made similarly large contributions of time and commitment to BAUT perhaps their opinions will have some weight, perhaps.

Not at all, we will just leave the board as we have so many others when the rules break down, there are no standards and the inmates take over the asylum. Hopefully, BAUT will hang on a bit longer, it is always sad to see good boards fall, but it seems a common enough fate, unfortunately.

1) A poster who insists upon being given more rope, and then hangs himself, has no leg to stand on.
2) Breaks are optimal. Burned bridges, or supernovae, less.
3) Instruments take calibration. First, reduce systemic error.

I have been participating only a short time.
This board is much more structured than I am use to.

But I have been having a vary positive experience so far. The Mods have been patiently instructive. There are a number of people who like to teach those who want to learn. I am finding a lot of great resources even in the ATM to help ATMers better understand their own interest here (In my experience).

So thanks Mods for all you do to facilitate, in bringing out the best in people! :)

Back to the OP: I too appreciate the moderation. Of course there are specific actions that I perhaps would have handled differently if I were a moderator, but overall BAUT is better because of the moderation. I am proud to say that after the 8 or so years that I have been part of the Bad Astronomy/ BAUT forums, to the best of my knowledge, I have had a total of zero points awarded to me. Even my dozens of posts in the infamous 0 = 0.9999.... thread didn't do it. It isn't hard. Know the rules, keep on topic and civil and you'll never appear on the Mod's point-assigning radar. As I speak, the mods are probably now combing my previous posts desperately looking for some infractable comment, and are wringing their hands in frustration because they can't find one. Good luck finding one.

Swift is entirely correct, but as the mod who pinged that poster and who edited the 27th letter out of that thread, I'll add that a large part of my reason for leaving the thread in place was just so that the "evidence" was clear and available to everyone.

There's been a few feedback threads (unlike this one) lately complaining of overly harsh moderation and such (from just a few members). Rather than post a report in the suspended or banned members thread, and have some people wonder if the member "really deserved" it, it seemed an especially good idea to leave it visible.

The title and topic of this thread is "Just wanted to say thanks to all the mods." People with complaints have had (and will have) ample opportunities to voice their complaints in other feedback threads. There is zero need to drag more of the same into this thread.
