But for the most part they bring it on themselves. What they dont get is that the conflict is a two way street ... partly because of the over-aggressive moderation on this board people get fed up and defensive quite quickly. You dont have these kinds of conflicts on other boards that are moderated better.
What you put up with amazes me sometimes. I don't own many kudos, but I'll give you as many as I've got.

Always have to put something against moderation, don't ya, tommac?

I was going to ask for an example of these "better moderated board" but on reflection I don't really care. The only people who bring it on themselves are the people who don't read or don't heed the rules. The rules are quite tight, sure, but there are benefits to tight and tightly enforced rules.

If you want to spend your evening in a rowdy tavern, then by all means do so. But don't assume that every establishment is a rowdy tavern.

In my experience, boards that don't have people complaining about moderation are those boards where people who disagree get banned and have all negative comment deleted outright.
If you think you'd really prefer that, you should try one for a while, at least until you get banned.
It might teach you how extremely lenient moderation here is compared to many other forums.

And I have, in fact, been on a board where I complained about the moderation. Because there essentially wasn't any. It's worth noting that there was so little that I'm not sure my complaints were ever actually heard. At least here, you know your complaints are heard, even if the majority of the board (as polls have repeatedly shown) doesn't agree with you.

Yes, all right. The polls are self-selecting. But if so many people are so angry at the mods but afraid to say anything, why aren't they taking the opportunity of the poll to make their voices heard?

Membership and participation are also self-selecting. I have been (until now) a non-participating non-member spectator for a while.

I suspect the people who complain are either ambivalent, or feel there has been some negative change over time. I haven't complained, but I would put myself in the ambivalent category - there are things I like, things I don't like, and I have a mechanism to deal with the situation that works for me. People who are really unhappy probably just leave, or never join in the first place, which leads to the not very surprising phenomenon that those who hang around a particular message board and participate, are those who like that board.

It would save an awful lot of time if there was a questionnaire for newcomers:

1. If you become a member of BAUT, how do you intend to spend your time here?

a. I want to discuss astronomy and related subjects such as physics, life in space and so on.

b. I want to share my astrophotography with like-minded people.

c. I want to ask questions about astronomy and space travel of people who know a lot more than me in the hope that I learn more about these subjects.

d. I want to hang out with like-minded people, occasionally talking about astronomy and space travel, occasionally talking about books and films on related themes, occasionally sharing jokes and various off-topic opinions, and generally have a good time in a way that doesn't spoil other people's enjoyment.

e. I want to overturn the whole of western so-called science with this theory wot I came up with one evening which blows relativity out of the water, honest! Granted, I don't actually know any mathematics, but nor did Einstein or Pythagoras, and they laughed at Galileo when he said the pope was round, so don't be too quick to judge!

f. I want to share my experience of God, and tell people why they were wrong to vote Colonel Barack Bush in as Prime Minister.

g. I want to prove that the moon landings were faked. Yes, you heard me. Faked! As in, we didn't actually go!!! Over the next few weeks I will prove that Apollo 11, the only mission to the moon, never went there. I have evidence that you WILL NOT have heard before. To begin with, why are there no stars visible? Secondly, how come the flag waved if the moon's atmosphere is a vacuum?

h. I want to put across pro-religious anti-evolution ideas but I intend to be coy about it so that nobody can call me out on my actual claim. I'll avoid direct questions and demand threads be closed when it gets too hot. Then I'll pour 3in1 on troubled waters.

i. I actually have nothing whatsoever to contribute, but I'll accumulate points by making endless complaints about the moderators, and playing devil's advocate, if only I knew what that meant.

There is no conflict; there's just you complaining because you can't dodge the ATM rules and claiming to be the voice of a conveniently silent majority.

Out of some strange sense of curiousity... who is the "they" in that first sentence? Moderators? I'm just trying to figure out what you are saying and what it has to do with the quoted post from Noclevername. I'm not asking as a moderator; like I said, I'm just curious.

If you prefer the way other boards are run, why not simply stay on the boards you prefer?

Most posters comfortably fit into a-d, those who are in e-h tend cross over into i quite frequently because of course if what they say is against the rules then the problem must be with the rules right?

If you don't like it, then by all means leave. It is against basic manners and common sense to join any sort of organization then complain endlessly about the way it is run, specially when 99% of the members of that organization approve of the way it is run.

Also, I'm beginning to wonder if your behavior can be explained by taking into account the forum you are promoting in your signature. Having had the opportunity to visit your forum once and seeing how it is made up of several of BAUT's disgruntled or banned members it doesn't take a stretch of imagination to figure out you are trying to round up an anti-BAUT posse to your forum and bank on the Google Ad revenues the traffic/SEO rankings generates.

That's getting a bit personal. It seems this thread has nowhere to go. Closed.
