Just wondering if there is any way members who like to support BAUT can donate.

Not that I know of, but Fraser's told me that the income (ads) pretty much match the expenses (server hosting).

Wasn't that before the hack and forced upgrade?
Not sure about this but I don't think he got the ads put back afterwards.

Perhaps the ads on Fraser's Universe Today (http://www.universetoday.com/) site cover the expenses. Just guessin'...

Oh, I never visited that site before. Yes, that site sure has a lot of ads. Ouch.

No, no, you mean we visit that site all the time, and read every ad. Very nice site (and good ads).

Yes, I love the UT ads as well. BTW, if there were a donate button on this BAUT forum, I would use it. It may however scare away some newbies who might incorrectly conclude that the site exists for the sole purpose of begging for money.

We would hide have hidden the donate button so it doesn't scare off posters.

What?

Oops, sorry.

Ya know, you could always set it up so the button doesn't appear until either Established Member or Order of Kilopi is reached.

Found it! Clever, incorporating it into the Post New Thread button in the Proving Grounds! ;)

Considering that I have been a member for more than 9 years and I'm still 1300 posts short of kilopi, maybe if you charged a nominal amount to purchase a certain number of e-posts....

I don't know whether this has been answered elsewhere...
I do know it has been asked: How much does BAUT cost?

Hard to tell because the cost is shared with the UT site, we're hosted on the same virtual server, floating on the Amazon cloud.

The UT site is making bank. It is the second google hit for keyword "universe" and 4th for keywords "space news" and "astronomy news".

UT's estimated worth is $151,000 (http://www.teqpad.com/www/universetoday.com) which is the revenue it generates in two years (that is the website industry's standard for measuring worth). This number is increasing by a significant percentage every year.

I can see why Fraser decided not to put ads on BAUTforum. It's because most of the traffic here is from returning users who don't even look at ads let alone show interest in them. As a result we get a clean ad-free forum while the daily traffic to UT pays for our service. I think this is very fair.
