View Full Version : Lost Post

I just lost a very long post I was typing up, complete with mathematical formulas typeset in TeX, to try to help out someone who was not familiar with differentiation in an ongoing thread.

After hitting preview, I got a message saying there was a missing security token, and nothing I tried, like hitting the previous page icon, would recover the text.

Does this happen often? Do I need to be saving the text periodically? There's nothing unusual about my hardware or software, it's a late model PC, with a late model OS, and a late model browser, all in common use.

Are you sure it was lost? There's a post in Fun'N'Games with some math in it that just cleared the Moderation queu. (New Members have their first few posts held for Moderator review to prevent control reduce spamming.)

I don't see it. It was here.

http://www.bautforum.com/showthread.php/115854-An-attempt-to-understand-Special-Relativity/page2

I wouldn't have said anything, but it was very long and took a lot of effort, so it was quite frustrating. I got a message that some kind of error occurred - I have seen this message about pending moderator approval, and it was definitely a different message. Something about a missing security token.

It seems OK now, but I'm using a public wireless access point right now, and it was a bit dodgy accessing another site. Maybe that's related somehow.

I am using Firefox, so that's not the common element.

(I hope I am out of this moderation queue soon. I am responding to your post, which was made after my last post, but that hasn't shown up again. My brain isn't compatible wiht this sort of time travel :()

As was said, posts from newbies sit in the "moderation queue" until approved by a moderator, as part of our anti-spam measures. Depending on time of day, how many mods are on-line, and what else they might be busy with, it can sometimes be hours (even many hours) before they get approved. A few more posts and it will stop happening

Make sure you have checked the "Remember me?" box when you log in, otherwise you get logged out if you're inactive for half an hour or so, which is quite possible if you're typing a very long post.

With posts with lots of TeX I tend to preview a lot, but it's still easy to lose track of time if you're off finding references so you get logged out in the middle.

If you do a quick reply or a reply with quote that will sometimes happen. For some reason you cannot recover a post in quick reply mode, after leaving that page (if you hit submit by accident or there is trouble with the software adding the post, for examples). One thing you can do (if you want to quote) is to hit reply with quote, and then click on Go Advanced. The software is more forgiving from the the advanced editor. Or, you can do what I do (after many lost posts), transfer the post to my text editor, write the reply and then paste it back into the reply to thread space.

I'll just add, many times, you can back out of an error page, click in the quick reply textbox, then "undo" (Ctrl-Z). Most of the time, you'll get all but the last character(s) of your post back.

It's because in the quick reply thingie, the input field doesn't exist on the page until you click, at which time it's created without any server contact, so when returning to the page from the error, the field is gone.
I suspect Moose's solution is highly dependent on the browesr.

After the first time I lost a long post, I've composed them in a text editor and then moved them over. Also that way I can do a last second check for any new posts since I started writing mine.

As a programmer, BAUT moderator and general computer user - good old simple "Notepad" (I use Windows) is one of my most used applications.

I seldom use notepad, I often get files from *nix systems and notepad gets really confused about their line endings.
I have several other simple text editors that I use, one of my criteria is that is is well-behaved about identifying line endings and preserving them.

Did you include links in any of them? Those can take a lot longer to clear until you cross the 'established member' line.

The mod queue was clear last I checked it, Paul, and when I last checked, you'd had four posts on the board and one (this last one) held pending an automatic moderation check.

The moderation checks are necessary to trap spam. It prevents the overwhelming most of it from reaching the boards, gives the mod team a chance to ban (and often block) the spammers, and really cuts down on the work of running this forum. Any post from a new user that contains a link will get flagged, as will posts with certain key words that often come up in spam postings.

The good news is that you'll be past the threshold for this pretty quickly.

no. no links in any of my posts so far. also, there were no hick-ups, browser related or otherwise. i saw the confirmation message for every single one. (the one that says that the post needs to be approved by a moderator first).

i understand why you are doing it and i have no issues with that whatsoever.
my posts in this thread are not complaints or expressions of impatience.

i just wanted to provide information that so far 3 of my posts were lost in the moderator queue.
i have observed nothing that would indicate any hick-up of the system during or after any of my posts.
also, after every single post i received the message that says that the post would be held in the mod queue until approved.
in other words the system confirmed the reception of my post.

When/if I'm typing something lengthy to a message board or whatever, I *always* highlight and copy to the mouse OR copy, paste, and e-mail it to myself via a different window. No sense taking chances. :hand: Yahoo! Groups does this somewhat too often; you get an error message.

I found another post of yours which cited a thread. And I'm pretty sure you actually posted in the comments thread on universetoday. The thread you linked (and are searching in) is a mirror of the universetoday article. UT and BAUT are sister sites, but separate sites entirely. There are two separate comments threads, one on each site.

Moderator queue is necessary because at any point there is at least one spammer named something like cheapforexonline registrations. It's always fun to spot them in the online users list.

another post was lost in this thread: http://www.bautforum.com/showthread.php/43241-Clear-Your-Lurker-Flag-Here
which was just a silly post to increase my post count. no link in it. reception confirmed. note: there is one of my posts in this thread visible but i posted 2 there and one is missing.

i don't remember in which thread i posted the third missing post.

also, i just saw that all of the last 3 of my posts in this thread show "9" as post count.

Post count is your own total, it'll show the same in all your posts.

The post count I see is 10, searching found 9 posts, the last is somewhere I don't have access to, likely the moderation queue.

I see your post in the Clear your lurker flag thread claims to be your 5th post, so it's before that they're missing.
When starting, did you post the same thing several times when it wasn't shown the first time?
If that's the case it's quite likely you simply got the duplicate posts deleted by a kind moderator while they were still in the queue, I know that was what I used to do when I was moderator, to keep the new poster from looking silly.

i knew from my lurking time that the first 10-15 posts would be held in mod queue waiting for approval.
i was prepared for my first posts to not show up immediately and i therefore did not post anything multiple times. i posted twice (with different content) in the lurker thread simply to increase my post count.

i don't really mind whether or not any of my missing posts will show up in the end. there certainly was nothing in them that needs to be preserved for eternity. :-)
i just wanted to provide feedback that something seems to be amiss.

More than one of mine has disappeared, and it's been days. I received the message saying they had been held up for sanitary inspection, but they never showed up. I can't possibly see how they might have been inappropriate or offensive; if they were found to be so, I never received any notice thereof.

Aren't new posters unable to read/send private messages while they're new enough that their posts still go through the moderation queue?

Limpkin, the problem is that you (and several other accounts) have been posting through an anonymizing proxy, and the posts in question look very similar to radar-hugging spam posts. Because some of the accounts that posted through the proxy were responsive, the mod team took a wait-and-see attitude until something shook loose. Now we know.

The current delay is that the mod team are discussing whether or not we're going to permit the use of anonymizing proxies to post, now that it's clear their use is not insignificant. There are obvious reasons in BAUT's interest (sock puppetry, spam, other mischief) to block them outright. What's less clear is if there's a baby somewhere in the dirty bathwater.

Aren't new posters unable to read/send private messages while they're new enough that their posts still go through the moderation queue?

It also prevented moderators from PMing instructions, clarifications, etc. And so the restriction was relaxed somewhat (quite a while back) once it became clear that the spambot was gone.

I see. I also see (from elsewhere) what the decision was. This will definitely limit the times/places when I have access, but you do what you have to do.

My radar-hugging spam-like post still hasn't appeared; I take it it's gone for good.
