What could we learn fraser, if indeed they did exist and we could identify them, serious question from a layman.

Looking for gas giants orbiting in the life-zone is an excellent way of narrowing down the search for extra-terrestrial intelligence. If we find such gas giants we should immediately look for potential radio signals coming from one (or more) of its moons. We don't even have to detect the moon, the radio signals will reveal its existence.
