Hi all,

Just wanted to share a couple of pics from the Parkes Radio Telescope 50th Anniversary weekend. The first shows the "Dish" looking ghostly in an early morning fog. The second shows the moon and telescope during a glorious night of "Opera at the Dish". It was a wonderful celebration!

Both are great photos. Did they actually do an opera there? What opera did they do (I trying to think of a radio astronomy themed opera)?

Yes, it was a lovely night - they had four singers (2 sopranos and 2 tenors) and a 47 piece philharmonic orchestra. They performed a number of pieces from various classical and modern sources including Mozart, Rossini and Les Miserables. The telescope was slewed toward the audience and the dish illuminated a delicate pink (it was a benefit evening for the McGrath Foundation, raising money for breast cancer research - pink is their signature colour). The evening concluded with a (quite spectacular) fireworks display while the orchestra played Holst's "Jupiter".

Coincidentally, Jupiter was prominent in the Eastern sky at the time, together with a very beautiful moon high over the telescope. A truly memorable evening! :)
