Bil Keane, the original cartoonist for The Family Circus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Family_Circus) has passed away at 89. (The comic has been done by his son Jeff for some years.) Stephan Pastis, who has fairly brutally parodied TFC in Pearls Before Swine, has a moving tribute in his blog (http://stephanpastis.wordpress.com/2011/11/09/the-dotted-line-fades-away-a-few-words-about-bil-keane-1922-2011/).

I think this link should work--this is the Comics Curmudgeon tribute, which actually shows the comic mentioned in that blog. http://joshreads.com/?p=11816 (Comics Curmudgeon was my first thought; my second was Pearls Before Swine.) My dad collected books of comic strips, and he had plenty of Family Circus from the days before it was supposed to be heartwarming.

I actually first learned of Mr. Keane's death from the Comics Curmudgeon, but didn't think to link there. I read it every day. That somewhat edgy comic ("Daddy brought his in his pocket") is also shown on the Wikipedia page for the comic, which doesn't yet mention Bil Keane's death.

I read it on the AV Club, which strikes me as kind of an odd place for the information. But I check AV Club's Newswire throughout the day, if I'm bored, whereas Comics Curmudgeon is only first thing in the morning. Because Newswire updates more than once a day every day, not just when something important happens.
