Someone I know emailed me this this morning...

To combat this problem, NASA scientists spent a decade and $12 million developing a pen that writes in zero gravity... When confronted with the same problem, the Russians used a pencil."

Did anyone else notice that this urban legend was repeated on "The West Wing" this week?

Leo: "We spent millions of dollars developing a pen for the astronauts that would work in zero gravity. Y'know what the Russians did? They used a pencil."

I guess they're out of material and have to surf the web for stuff. Maybe they need new writers.

I've heard the pencil thing before.
Anyone know of its validity or origin?

Actually, I think one of the writers on the show is a fan of the space program (no...serious!)

In one episode when someone slaggs NASA and the Apollo missions, the Rob Lowe character goes on a very nice diatribe on why it was so important.
In another episode, a former physics professor comes in and effectively pleads for money for an accelerator.
Anyone else see these episodes?
