View Full Version : February New Moon Spotting

2012-Feb-17, 08:20 PM
It’s nearly time for my monthly New Moon spotting challenge. North Americans may be able to sight the Moon a little more than a day old on February 22, while appearing as an unusual Lunar Boat, i.e. U-shaped. Europeans will have an opportunity to spot it when younger than a day.

My detailed article previewing the waxing crescent Moon’s first appearance of the coming lunar month appears under the links for my related graphics at www.CurtRenz.com/moon

Photos and descriptions of the young Moon would be welcome additions to this thread. Please include your location, date, time and time zone.

Below is a photo that I took from Arlington Heights, Illinois of the Lunar Boat aged 32:47 hrs on 2009 MAR 27 at 19:53 CDT.

Seeing the first moon of each month is actually an old Jewish tradition and the basis for setting up the months (Not today tough). I am trying to observer first moon on any month. Here is a video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qh8DS_41Q8)I took some months ago . I will report my results. There is a lot of difference between Israel and the US, But If I see it, you in the US certainly can!

Those of the "Israel New Moon Society" watch out for the first glimmer of the new crescent literally with a messianic fervor http://sites.google.com/site/moonsoc/

Yes. It is a traditional observance of an early Jewish low to set the months by actuall seeing the moon. The Hebrew calnedar is a Lunar-Solar month, the Month are Lunar but every 2-3 years th is an additional month to compensate for the 11 day differences. The Islamic Calendar is only Lunar, and the Islamic holidays wanders around seasons...

Being that the Jewish calendar only was created because of the destruction of the Second Temple in 70AD, it has done well at reconciling the lunar month with the solar year, keeping their festivals in their seasons and to remain unchanged for 2000 years, being that a true repeating lunar-solar cycle occurs only every 689,272 years. Those in Israel practicing observation of the new moon obviously expect a restoration to the Biblical system in some kind of future Third Temple, where the new month would be proclaimed on witness testimony each month from Jerusalem by direct visual observation.

Thanks to those who've provided an historical background. We were clouded out yesterday here in Chicagoland, and we’re getting fluffy "lake effect" snow right now.

Heads-up: The Moon will occult Mag +3.0 Zeta Tauri for many North Americans during the night of March 1-2. My graze map is now on my Moon webpage, and more occultation graphics will be added once we get through the New Moon spotting period: www.CurtRenz.com/moon
