Can anyone identify or point me to a source to identify some spiders?

These spiders are small (about 3mm body length) with bright yellow bodies, black legs, and a black patch on the very end of their abdomens. They also seem to be social, with a couple of dozen living in a common web. Alas, no photos. I have a macro lens for my 35mm SLR, but it uses film, not CCDs, so I can't get any pictures.

Thanks. I just tried that one, and got http://www.insectidentification.org/imgs/insects/yellow-garden-spider_5.jpg which looks nothing like them. :-(

Those are also nightmare-fuel sized.

My guess is that you've got some babies, and they will change colors when they mature a bit. What shape are the abdomens? Round, Oval, Pointy? How long are the legs in relation to the body? Is the web around them horizontal, vertical (and circular) or randoms stings with no pattern or structure?

The so-called Garden Spider has a yellow abdomen with black markings.* Those are the biggest we ever get around here. (Well, there are these dark grey non-web spiders that pop up now and again. I don't even like to think about those monsters.)

Lots of spiders behave socially while still maturing, sharing a common web. But they'll eventually eat one another until only the toughest are left.

[*Edit: that's the one in the pic you provided. So, yours is something else, eh?]

The web seems pretty random. It's woven between my deck's railing and gate, with part of it horizontal and part vertical. The abdomen's are round. The legs are about 2/3 the length of the body.
