An issue has arisen on Wikipedia's page on the 2012 doomsday, which I edit. An editor has complained that the article has little information on the phenomenon as an internet meme, but this is largely because searching through thousands of bogus websites to find one page that gives honest information is next to impossible.

I was wondering, are there any sites that give shape and value to internet phenomena? For instance, if I wanted to track a meme by searching for search terms over time, are there sites that allow for that? Or sites that list the number of youtube videos or websites created on certain topics?

Yeah, and they linked to Google Insights, which was somewhat helpful, although, infuriatingly, interest veered wildly depending on which search terms were used, though they all spiked to 100 in November 2009 (Can't imagine why (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_(film))).
