Welcome to International Observe the Moon Night! As decided by a public vote, the 2012 event will take place September 22nd. On this site you will find information and downloads to help you plan your event. Please visit the event registration page to put your event on the map!

The International Observe the Moon Night Team consists of scientists, educators, and Moon enthusiasts from government, non-profit organizations, and businesses throughout the United States and across the globe. We believe in the inspirational power of the Moon — a celestial body that has influenced human lives since the dawn of time. International Observe the Moon Night has created the opportunity for people to take notice of the Moon’s beauty and share that experience with one another. Through International Observe the Moon Night, we hope to instill in the public a sense of wonderment and curiosity about our Moon. Our partnerships enable us to stay up to date with the latest and greatest scientific discoveries about Earth’s nearest neighbor, and we strive to bring those discoveries to the public.

In fairness, I observe the moon any night it's visible (at a reasonable hour.) Is it possible for anyone to be outside at night, under the moon, and not spend at least a moment looking at it?

We're in the process of getting a Hangout On Air Event organized for this. I'll post it in the CQx Blog and in the Hangout Sub-Forum as soon as we get more solid information regarding times and event locations both locally and online.

Ask the average person on the street what the current phase of the moon is. I'd guess about 20% get it even close, and lots won't even know what the question means.
