Geomagnetic storms interfere with power transmission by causing motion in the Earth's magnetic field at ground level. This happens to varying degrees around the entire globe, so all it would take is a strong enough storm. Also, a grid not directly affected could be indirectly affected by surges and sudden loads as nearby grids go down. Here's an example of how problems can cascade to neighboring systems:
