View Full Version : Jupiter-Full Moon-Aldebaran - Short Straight Line - Nov 28

Jupiter, the Full Moon and the first magnitude star Aldebaran will form a straight line with a span of only 5° during the night of 2012 NOV 28-29. For Chicago observers this will occur shortly after moonrise. For observers in Brussels the trio will appear almost perfectly vertical.

For my more detailed article and graphics with data, please visit: www.CurtRenz.com/moon

Descriptions and photos of the alignment would be welcome additions to this thread.

Tomorrow we can see a nice conjunction between the Moon, Jupiter and Aldebaran

This event involving Jupiter will occur simultaneously with transits of Ganymede and its shadow across Jupiter. It may be a fine evening for a star party with photo opportunities.

Yes I saw it. Went out to look survey the terrible parking discipline and noticed the three. Only captured two of them on my phone camera and that was rubbish anyway.

Great to look at though.

Here it is. Rubbish pic I know. I didn't get the star but it was there I assure you.

Thanks for sharing, Glom. Any effort is much appreciated. For my photo I had to overexpose the Moon to get Aldebaran to appear.

Here’s my rendition of Jupiter, the Full Moon and Aldebaran in a straight line this evening. It was taken from Arlington Heights, Illinois on 2012 NOV 28 at 17:06 CST, which was 44 minutes after sunset and 30 minutes after moonrise.

It's a pretty amazing sight. I wasn't aware of this alignment, and when I drove home from work several hours ago with a coworker, I pointed out the full moon to him, and a bright spot next to it as Jupiter. Nice to see, but it was still at almost a right angle with Aldebaran. Looks pretty neat now tho.

I got a pretty good view of the moon and Jupiter, but couldn't make out Aldebaran through thin clouds and suburban light pollution.

I'm in the city and it's all you see.
Looks just like Centaur's photo except I see a third 'star' making a line with Aldebran and Jupiter. No other stars are visible from here with the full moon. This light pollution makes the conjunction even more remarkable, ironically.

I get up this morning and see the Moon is now on the other side of Jupiter. What dark magic is this?

Made a great picture coming up an onslip, but I couldn't get it.

Another one just now. Still only a phone camera. I don't have my SLR at the moment.

I get up this morning and see the Moon is now on the other side of Jupiter. What dark magic is this?I noticed that, too. It was pretty cool to see the motion so dramatically. No doubt someone somewhere is saying that the Moon's drastic motion is surely a sign of the apocalypse. :)
