If it wasn't for the date, I'd not doubt this, but close examination of the report, and meticulous checking that my sense of humour was in good order, have revealed no flaw, so here it is:

Gassy volatiles or a fire fountain of liquid lava is unknown as yet.
Who would have though it of Mercury, the most baked-out of planets?

There are no boring planets or moons (or asteroids or comets, etc, etc). They always manage to surprise us.

I especially like the instrument mentioned in the press release and which did not survive the final MESSENGER design - the Joint Analyzer for Plume Eruptions - aka JAPE. :)
