Today is NASA’s 55th birthday. Unfortunately, the celebration is muted due to the government shutdown, forcing much of NASA to shut down as well (see our overview of what’s still running at NASA and what’s not). I still have a NASA booklet on the future of human spaceflight printed in 1957. They envisioned a trip to the moon; but at the time, the plan called for building a space station in orbit, and sending a vehicle to the moon from a station. Otherwise, most of the information is still useful.
