To be clear, it's not that nitrogen is poisonous. Vessels containing hazardous substances are often purged with nitrogen precisely because it is inert. But that leaves an environment of too much nitrogen and too little oxygen.

It's not the nitrogen itself that is the killer, it's the anoxia caused by the nitrogen displacing the oxygen.

In my line of work, this kind of thing comes under Confined Space Entry, which is a special type of work with special procedures including breathing apparatus and standby men to look out for those doing the entry into the confined space.
