Confusing to someone on the opposite side of the world, who doesn't read or speak Japanese, as the names are duplicated.
The island is supposed to have been named Niijima, which is a holiday resort island, with white sand beaches and an airport!!
And it's said to be off the coast of an island called Nishinoshima, which Google Earth finds as a sea mount (?) 500 miles to the south east of Japan

Anyone know more?

Niijima means "new island" so it isn't surprising that the name was given to the new island. I don't know why the old New Island was named that, though.

ETA: there is also this thread: http://cosmoquest.org/forum/showthread.php?147521-Volcanic-Blast-Forms-New-Island-Near-Japan

And according to that, the island hasn't been officially named yet. So someone along the way might have misinterpreted new island as New Island (which is why we have capital letters in English!)

There is no duplication in the names. The new one is Niijima, which means new island, and the former is Nishinojima, which means west island. They would be written 新島 and 西ノ島.

Although there really is an existing Niijima (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nii-jima). Not sure why Wikipedia hyphenates it, though...

Has anyone checked on Surtsey lately? I think I saw a TV show like this. :)

There was an island formed like this when I lived in Japan. I don't know if it survived (I think it was in the Oshima group. But it was a long time ago).

It just turned 50! Half of the island has eroded away since the eruption stopped, but it's still about a square km in area. http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/1267/

There's also a live webcam from the island here: http://en.vedur.is/weather/observations/webcams/surtsey/

Ah! So desu ka!

I was right to be confused. No doubt the Japanese find our funny ways with capital letters - or just letters! - as confusing!
