I wanted to 'double footnote' this overview posted by Antoniseb because Reid and Honma concisely describe the state-of-the-art location of the galactic nuclei and provide newer, higher total mass estimates. As always, when all the shouting is over, astrometrics rules the day!

I remember someone on here asking about distance measurements a while back, and worrying about Doppler effects being model dependent.
This paper has parallax measurements of objects in our galaxy, and also of objects in M33 (a galaxy in the local group). Distances measured via parallax have far fewer underlying assumptions of course.
