View Full Version : CosmoQuest Give Away

The build team has been way too quiet lately, and we know it. Thing is, we totally under estimated the effect that moving into a new building would have on our functionality.

And we failed to realize just how much less space we were going to have.

If you want to read the whole story, check out Pamela's blog post (http://cosmoquest.org/x/blog/2014/01/boxes-the-overly-optimistic-move/). Short version is: We've got too much stuff and we'd love to give some of it to you. We're going to post pictures of the stuff we have to give away below. If you'd like something, leave a note in the thread. Now here is the catch, we don't want the whole internet diving in and saying "gimme gimme." In order to get some of our free stuff, you need to have either done 100 (and for heavy items 1000) image classifications, OR you need to be an Established member of the forum (and for heavy items a Senior Member or higher).

These items are open to anyone, but if you are international and want to help with postage, we'd adore you, but mostly we just want to give you stuff. Pamela found some US stamps while cleaning her house over Christmas (Forever stamps are awesome) and we're going to use those up for now.

We will select who gets what on Feb 1, so if you're desperate to get something, go do some science :-)

(Feb 1 also gives us time to find everything we really need to give away!)

Here is our first image of things we're giving away: We have 5 size XL 3 large T-shirts (Hanes Beefy T's) that we got at SXSW. They've never been worn, and we're not quite sure why they haven't been given away yet... Here's your chance. Open to anyone who is a Senior Member or higher of the Forum OR who has 1000 images classified. (Updated 2/24)

19009 Pocket Image on Front
19010 Large image on Back

Tomorrow, Pamela will be going through this bin and several like it to sort out what all we have and to post photos. These items (or sets of them) will be available for classifiers of 100 images / Established members of the forum.

Want!

I can't see my gallieries right now, that is odd but I hope what they will back soon.

I was taking a break from Asteroid Mappers since the constant glich of the counter/auto log off was anoying me, but I hope to retake soon :)

The postdoc is rather expensive. She needs to pay rent, after all.

As I understand it, kilopians = senior members, in that it's same # of posts? Which made me LOL when I FINALLY figured it out...

IIRC kilopi has one or two extras, like more room in PM box.

HenrikOlsen
2014-Jan-22, 01:28 PM
I don't think we actually have senior members.

Normally it goes:
Newbie: Below secret number of posts (lots)
Member: Above secret number of posts (4936 of this level or higher)
Established Member: 100 posts or more (1593 of this level or higher)
Order of Kilopi: 3142 posts or more (138 [except for the weirdness of Grapes' multiple accounts most of which lost post counts in the moves])
Honored Member: Posthumous only (2)

In the Order of Kilopi there are several custom titles because we have generally been around for a long time.
Oops, I see R.A.F is actually a Senior Member, I suppose that's a custom title.

Moose
2014-Jan-22, 02:15 PM
I haven't really been paying attention to this, but isn't Senior Member between 1000 and 3142 posts? There's also a Post-Doc (which may well be a custom title for Gillian, rather than an actual group.)

IIRC (fat chance) "Post-doc" used to be a standard group (I don't remember how many posts), but disappeared (I think) a couple of reorganizations ago. It is now a custom title.

Nope, it shifts between worzel, Established Member at 3134 posts and JAICOA, Order of Kilopi at 3142 posts.

Gillian's Bad Post-Doc is a custom title now, it used to be one of the levels back when it was the Bad Astronomy forum.

When the Order of Kilopi was being established, I complained about how much I'd been looking forward to reaching Bad Post-Doc on the Bad Astronomy Bulletin Board and how it wasn't, clearly, going to happen. Because the titles there were based on educational level. So I was given one, presumably to stop me from whining.

This is very strange, but I do not remember (and it hasn't been that long ago) exactly "how" I talked ToSeek into giving me the senior member label...

I do remember I wanted Senior Curmudgeon as a title, but about that time, all title changes were stopped. (as far as I remember)

...and now that the "secret" is out, everyone is going to want a custom title...

Hey all, it's a wee bit past the original Feb 1st due date, but I'll get started on the giveaways TODAY since Pamela is in grant-deadline-ness at the moment.

So, I'll get a random # generator going (or borrow Pamela's gaming dice) on these comments that have already been left and checking eligibility, then announce the winners (at least the first round of those) later tonight.

Good luck and cheers!

NoisyAstronomer

Alright....

I listed all the people who commented here in order of time, assigned a number, and threw it into a random sequence generator.

Good news: Enough of you wanted different stuff that it seems like you will all get your first choice (as long as you qualify according to our stats. If you didn't check your PMs.)
Not so good news: There was a mistake in the t-shirt size/count. We have 1 XL JWST shirt and 6 L JWST shirts. So, that may change your preference and if so, let me know.

Some of you commented on stuff discussed in the thread but you know what? I'll count that as an entry. However, I will give first priority in choosing to those who put stuff down, and then anyone who commented but didn't put a preference still gets a chance to decide if they want something in the order listed below.

Here be the winners!

ToSeek, senior - JWST shirt! XL or L? (I think we'll give it one more round and then you can have extra after that?)
Solfe, senior - NASA meatball pin and compass
Moose, senior - your choice!
Shigeru, 12,667 images classified - JWST shirt! You did ask for XL, but I think ToSeek gets first dibs on that. Still want if only L left?
swampyankee, senior - You asked for "anything I can hang on the wall of a middle school classroom." How about one of the infrared posters?
tranan, 7030 images classified - you asked for anything we want to send you. With well over 1000+ classifications, you pretty much get your pick. Let me know!
gillianren, senior - Solar system Jr. trading cards! Those are so cute.
HenrikOlsen, senior - your choice!
kmasterdo, 5637 image classifications - Space data book! (That looked to be your first choice, is that correct?)
dwardio, 208 image classifications - ESO Lanyard, USNO Observatory Sticker, Swinburne Keychain
veegee, 135 image classifications - your choice from the 100+ category!
slang, senior - your choice!
trebuchet, senior - unfortunately we don't have CQX shirts to give away, but I can send you a JWST one if you'd like
coolrocketdude, 3433 image classifications - ALMA Book!
cougar, senior - the St. Louis Astronomical Society pin and two other pick 3's of your choice! Sounds like you want pins...
neowatcher - JWST shirt! (again, so sorry, is L okay?)
swift, senior - your choice!
noclevername, senior - your choice!
R.A.F., senior, the only by title :-) - your choice!
mikeezfosheezy - you said you wanted a tote! Which one, the ASP or UNAWE?

Congrats, everyone. If you've won, you need to PM or email me your contact info and sort any preferences so I can physically get things to you. My email address is noisyastronomer@gmail.com. P.O. Boxes and office addresses are fine. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks! I'll get this sorted and then do a round 2...

If there is someone else out there doing actual image work on this site, then I would feel better with them getting it if I can't wear it. Besides, there's probably a better chance that there is someone younger than me (therefore smaller in stature) that can fit in it.

I'd prefer the XL but could live with a L if someone else absolutely has to have the larger size.

trebuchet, senior - unfortunately we don't have CQX shirts to give away, but I can send you a JWST one if you'd like

That's cool! I'll get off an email. L is good.

Can I get an autographed pic of you and Pamela too? I'm a huge fan of astronomy cast and the space hang out pod casts I listen to every episode

"That shining twilight flame? Neither saucer nor plane. Afloat in western skies, behold Venus with your eyes." Neil Degrasse Tyson

I figured you meant the UNAWE tote b/c it's pretty awesome, but wanted to check!

I know Pamela has silver sharpies around just for that reason. I just use them to doodle. I'll see what I can come up with!

Got mine Tuesday, opened it yesterday.
It's much nicer than I thought. The tones in the picture didn't do it justice.

Thank you. Much appreciated.

I have discovered my beautiful new JWST T-shirt (black) REALLY shows the cat hair. I love it (and the kitties) anyhow!

Heh, last time I had to trim Kaylee's claws, I came out of it looking remarkably like a wookiee. And I was covered in cat hair.

Kaylee and Zoe's veterinarian says that plaid is the only 'color' that doesn't show pet hair. (She's worn plaid flannel as her day-to-day non-surgical working 'scrubs' for at least the thirty-two years I've known her. It does seem to work.)

I love the Vengeance replica. Did you get it with the DVD/Blu-ray combo from Wal Mart?

I cant find the stand alone hot wheels ships in any store, and dread doing business on line.

Anyone know where the into darkness ships are in stores?

AWESOME!

Yeah the pics were all taken with my phone, hence the lameness.

As an allergic person with a cat, that stuff is UNSTOPPABLE.
